In 1923, the Railway companies of the United Kingdom were merged into four large companies, often known as the "Big Four". Apart from the duration of World War Two when the railways came under governmental control, these four companies ran the British railways until the beginning of 1948, when all the railways were nationalised to form British Rail. This site is dedicated to one of those companies, the London Midland and Scottish Railway. The London Midland and Scottish Railway took over the operation of the midland and west coast lines, and often shared territory with the Great Western and London and North Eastern railways. It also ran railways in Northern Ireland. I would recommend that newcomers to the history of British railways visit the "Introduction","Formation" and "Why the Grouping" pages first as these contain definitions of abbreviations used throughout this site. Some terms will be defined in glossaries on the side of the relevant pages. All photographs on this site are my own unless otherwise stated. Legal action may be taken against anyone using my photographs without permission. Plea for Photographs This is a plea for photographs that I can use legally on this site. Although I have found a source of free pictures of preserved locomotives (The Tony Dunkley Collection), I am still interested in pictures of locomotives that didn't make into preservation (e.g. streamlined Coronations and Patriots). If anyone has any photographs of LMS locomotives, carriages, signals, stations, prominent figures, etc, I would appreciate it (and we are talking serious grovelling here) if I can use them. As this site is not run for profit, I cannot afford to pay vast amounts of money for the privilege, but I will credit all photographers, and will provide links to relevant sites if requested. Otherwise, I will have to resort to photographing Hornby engines which is not my preferred solution. Please use the link above to contact me for information; do not send the photographs at this stage. Backup links
